We are now calling upon the governor and our colleagues in the Senate to join us in extending those rent laws for another period of five years and to avoid putting the working families of New York through the fear and frustration that took place in '97, the year of expiration.

The city and the metropolitan region is in a housing crisis that has been exacerbated by the events of September 11. Unless we take action now to preserve the rent regulation system, housing in the city of New York will be too expensive.

We call upon the governor and the Senate to join us in repealing those provisions of the law that give rise to the de facto vacancy decontrol that occurs by virtue of the current law. Landlords in the city are clearly taking advantage of the provision and they are hiking rental rates to a level that working families can not afford.
