Statement From Speaker Silver Regarding
Nomination Of Judge Jonathan Lippman To Serve As
Chief Judge Of The New York State Court Of Appeals

I commend Governor David A. Paterson on his nomination of Judge Jonathan Lippman to serve as Chief Judge of the New York State Court of Appeals.

I have known Judge Lippman for many years. He has earned a universal and genuine esteem from his colleagues, the kind that transcends partisanship and parochialism.

When he accepted appointment to the post of Chief Administrative Judge of the New York State Unified Court System in 1996, he took on a mammoth responsibility and in the process, earned nationwide acclaim for his leadership and vision.

His leadership abilities were evident from the beginning:

In his efforts to simplify our court structure so that it can deliver justice swiftly and more effectively;

In the innovations that he helped introduce in this State;

And, in his plans to modernize our court facilities and to make them more secure.

Judge Lippman is a credit to our judicial system and to the legal profession as a whole - and to all who strive to "give back" through public service.
