Statement From Speaker Silver
Regarding The Passing Of Percy Sutton

With the passing of Percy Sutton, New York has lost a remarkable citizen. From his work as Manhattan borough president to his efforts as a civil rights activist to his leadership behind the preservation of the legendary Apollo Theater, he contributed greatly to our state and nation.

Although I did not serve with Mr. Sutton during his time in the Assembly, he was a mentor and friend to many of my Assembly colleagues and leaders throughout this state.

On behalf of my Assembly colleagues and Assemblyman Keith Wright, who currently represents Mr. Sutton's district, my sympathies go out to Mr. Sutton's family and to his many friends and admirers as they mourn this loss.
