Speaker Silver Statement On Recent Anti-Immigration Legislation

Immigrants have always been an integral part of American history and their contributions to our society and our economy are as important as the spirit and vitality they bring to communities across the country.

Led by Lady Liberty, as symbolized by the Statue of Liberty, New York State has historically acknowledged that diversity is our greatest strength and therefore has readily welcomed immigrants. Efforts to address immigration through the local enforcement of federal laws and the selective application of local laws and ordinances directed toward immigrant groups -- such as the law enacted in Arizona -- fosters an environment of prejudice which is absolutely unacceptable.

Intolerance and discrimination have no place in our society. New York will continue to condemn and fight against any anti-immigrant initiatives.
