The taxes we pay, the quality of our children’s education, the safety of our neighborhoods, the quality of our medical care, our rights as consumers, are all decided by the people we elect to represent us. Yet, voter turnout in the United States has declined about 20 percent in the past three decades. Only about half of all eligible voters in the U.S. cast their vote on Election Day. For state and local elections, voter turnout is usually even lower. The power of your vote remains unchallenged. Exercise it. Register. And make your vote count. |

Now, voters can register, re-register and make address changes at many state and local offices serving the public, including the departments of Labor, Social Services, Motor Vehicle and the State and City Universities. To encourage younger people to vote, the law allows 17 year-olds to register if they will reach their 18th birthday by the end of the calendar year. New Yorkers moving within the county or within New York City automatically have their voter registration transferred to the new address, and a notice sent confirming their new polling place whenever the Board of Elections receives notice of the move. The Assembly strongly supports these measures to make it easier for all New Yorkers to participate in the voting process. |
