PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL:
Requires the Office of Victim Assistance to provide victims and/or
surviving family members a listing of statewide victim assistance
programs.
 
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:.
Section 1: amends the correction law by adding a new section 12.
Section 2: sets the effective date.
 
JUSTIFICATION:
Victims of violent crimes are often not made aware of available state-
wide programs and support services. This bill seeks to correct that
inadequacy by requiring the Office of Victim Assistance to provide
victims and/or surviving family members a listing of statewide victim
assistance programs that offer crisis intervention, advocacy, coun-
seling, and other victim support services.

AN ACT to amend the correction law, in relation to requiring the office
of victim assistance to notify crime victims of the availability of
victim support services
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-bly, do enact as follows:
1 Section 1. The correction law is amended by adding a new section 12 to
2 read as follows:
3 § 12. Victim support services notice. The commissioner shall direct
4 the office of victim assistance to provide, upon a conviction for any
5 crime, any victim, or in the case of a homicide, a surviving family
6 member, of such crime written notice of the availability of victim
7 support services programs in the state. Such written notice shall
8 include a statewide listing of victim assistance programs that provide
9 crisis intervention, advocacy, counseling, and other victim support
10 services and shall include a link to the website of the office of victim
11 services.
12 § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
