TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of

PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL:
Designates a portion of the state highway system as the "Port Authority
Police Officer Steven J. Tursellino Memorial Highway"
 
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1: amends the highway law by adding a new section 344-o.
Section 2: states that the commissioner of transportation shall provide
for the installation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state
highway system as designated pursuant to section one of this act.
Section 3: sets the effective date.
 
JUSTIFICATION:
Port Authority Police Officer Steven J. Tursellino passed away on
September 13, 2013, at the age of 45. Officer Tursellino died as a
result of cancer he developed following his assignment to the search and
recovery efforts at the World Trade Center after the September 11th
terrorist attacks. Officer Tursellino, who was originally sworn in as a
member of the NYPD, spent the majority of his 20-year career with the
Port Authority Police Department. He left behind his beloved wife Lisa
and four children Jake, Ryan, Regan and Thomas.
Officer Tursellino resided in Hauppauge in the County of Suffolk.
Renaming a portion of the state highway system in Officer Tursellino's
hometown would be a fitting honor and a way to recognize the supreme
sacrifice he made on behalf of the residents of the Great State of New
York.

AN ACT to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of
the state highway system as the "Port Authority Police Officer Steven
J. Tursellino Memorial Highway"
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-bly, do enact as follows:
1 Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 344-o to
2 read as follows:
3 § 344-o. Portion of the state highway system to be designated as the
4 "Port Authority Police Officer Steven J. Tursellino Memorial Highway".
5 All that portion of the state highway system constituting state route
6 111 between state route 454 and state route 347 in the towns of Islip
7 and Smithtown, county of Suffolk, shall be designated and known as the
8 "Port Authority Police Officer Steven J. Tursellino Memorial Highway".
9 § 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the instal-
10 lation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system
11 as designated pursuant to section one of this act. However, to avoid
12 confusion and to limit any possible disruption of commerce, the desig-
13 nation called for pursuant to section one of this act shall be one of
14 ceremonial nature and the official name of such highway shall not be
15 changed as a result of this act.
16 § 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
