An act in relation to authorizing Isaac B. Bertos to take the compet-
itive civil service examination for the position of police officer and
be placed on the eligible list for employment as a full-time police
officer for the village of Ilion
PURPOSE:
This bill would authorize Isaac Bertos to become a full time police
officer in the village of Ilion.
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1: Permits Isaac Bertos to become a full time police officer in
the village of Ilion.
Section 2: Requires that Isaac Bertos be subject to the merit and phys-
ical fitness tests required under civil service law.
Section 3: Sets forth the effective date.
JUSTIFICATION:
The police department in the village of Ilion has had a difficult time
recruiting officers to join the department, which could present a threat
to public safety. Isaac Bertos is currently a part time police officer
in the village. Isaac would join the department full time, but cannot
because he is over the civil service age limit. This bill would grant
him a waiver to join the department full time.

AN ACT in relation to authorizing Isaac B. Bertos to take the compet-
itive civil service examination for the position of police officer and
be placed on the eligible list for employment as a full-time police
officer for the village of Ilion
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-bly, do enact as follows:
1 Section 1. Notwithstanding the provisions of section 58 of the civil
2 service law, including the age requirements under paragraph (a) of
3 subdivision 1 of such section, or any other provision of law to the
4 contrary, Isaac B. Bertos, who has been continuously employed by the
5 village of Ilion, in the county of Herkimer, as a part-time police offi-
6 cer, shall be eligible to take the competitive civil service examination
7 for the position of police officer and shall, contingent upon his score
8 on such examination, be eligible to be placed on the eligible list for
9 appointment as a full-time police officer with the village of Ilion
10 police department.
11 § 2. Isaac B. Bertos shall otherwise be subject to the merit and
12 fitness provisions of the civil service law applicable to full-time
13 police officers.
14 § 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
