        AN ACT to amend the canal law, in relation to  the  general  powers  and
          duties of the canal corporation

          The  People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:
 
     1    Section 1.  Subdivision 14 of section 10 of the canal law, as  amended
     2  by  chapter 420 of the laws of 1968, is amended and two new subdivisions
     3  6-a and 8-a are added to read as follows:
     4    6-a. Cause the locks and lift bridges of the canal system to be  oper-
     5  ated  annually  for  the  passage of commercial and recreational traffic
     6  between May first and November fifteenth, generally, subject to  natural
     7  conditions,  weather, required maintenance, capital rehabilitation work,
     8  or other factors related to safe canal operation.
     9    8-a. Maintain and preserve the integrity of the Erie Canal's  historic
    10  resources, including its structures, floating plant, and unique landside
    11  features.
    12    14. Permit commercial boat [owners] companies operating upon the canal
    13  system  to  use  state  drydocks,  travel lifts, or other facilities for
    14  required coast guard  drydock  inspections,  for  non-navigation  season
    15  storage,  or  while  making  emergency repairs to their vessels at rates
    16  prescribed under subchapter D of chapter III of title twenty-one of  the
    17  New York state codes, rules and regulations.
    18    § 2. This act shall take effect immediately
