TITLE OF BILL:
An act directing the commissioner of the office of parks, recreation and
historic preservation to conduct a legal review for the re-designation
of Donald J. Trump State Park, in Putnam and Westchester counties to a
new name
 
PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL:
This bill would direct the commissioner of the office of parks, recre-
ation and historic preservation to conduct a legal review for the re-de-
signation of Donald J. Trump State Park, in Putnam and Westchester coun-
ties to a new name.
 
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1 of the bill directs the Commissioner of the New York State
Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation to conduct a legal
review of the re-designation of Donald J. Trump State Park. Within one
year of the effective date of this act, the commissioner shall submit
the findings of such review to the governor, the temporary president of
the senate, and the speaker of the assembly. If such review determines
that such legal authority exists, the commissioner shall change the name
of such park. In the event the name of such park is changed, the office
of parks, recreation and historic preservation shall provide for the
installation and maintenance of appropriate signage and any other admin-
istrative actions necessary to implement the name change and to improve
the park for the enjoyment of the public. Section 2 of the bill is the
effective date.
 
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ORIGINAL AND AMENDED VERSION (IF APPLICABLE):
This version directs the Commissioner to submit the findings of the
review to the governor, the temporary president of the senate, and the
speaker of the assembly, within one year of the effective date of this
act.
 
JUSTIFICATION:
New York State has always been known for its history of welcoming and
embracing people of all cultures and backgrounds. Even our park system
reflects these values. According to the Declaration of Policy of the
Office of Parks Recreation and Historic Preservation, our parks should
foster and strengthen the sense of purpose, well-being and identity of
the citizens of this state. The names of these parks and green spaces
should embody the goals of uplifting. and unifying New Yorkers. For
these reasons the Donald J. Trump State Park should be renamed.
Furthermore, by directing the Commissioner of the Office of Parks,
Recreation & Historic Preservation to improve the park for the enjoyment
of the public, this legislation will ensure that the park provides
recreational and educational opportunities for all New Yorkers to enjoy.

AN ACT directing the commissioner of the office of parks, recreation and

The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-bly, do enact as follows:
1 Section 1. The commissioner of the office of parks, recreation and
2 historic preservation shall conduct a legal review of the re-designation
3 of Donald J. Trump State Park, in Putnam and Westchester counties, to
4 determine whether the authority exists to change the name of such park.
5 Within one year of the effective date of this act, the commissioner
6 shall submit the findings of such review to the governor, the temporary
7 president of the senate, and the speaker of the assembly. If such
8 review determines that such legal authority exists, the commissioner
9 shall change the name of such park. In the event the name of such park
10 is changed, the office of parks, recreation and historic preservation
11 shall provide for the installation and maintenance of appropriate
12 signage and any other administrative actions necessary to implement the
13 name change and to improve the park for the enjoyment of the public.
14 § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
