Assembly Resolution No. 154

        COMMEMORATING the 151st Anniversary of the City of
        Yonkers on June 1, 2023
 
  WHEREAS,  It  is  the  intent  of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate  the  distinguished  histories  of  the  communities   which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Attendant  to  such  concern,  and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this  Legislative  Body  is  justly  proud  to
commemorate  the  151st  Anniversary  of  the City of Yonkers on June 1,
2023; and
 
  WHEREAS, Located along the  Hudson  River,  Yonkers  is  New  York's
fourth largest city and the largest city in Westchester County; and
 
  WHEREAS,  First  established  in  1646,  Yonkers  was not officially
recognized as a city until June 1, 1872; and
 
  WHEREAS, A beacon of diversity  and  cultures,  41  percent  of  the
population in Yonkers is Hispanic; and
 
  WHEREAS,  The City of Yonkers has a rich history, with the invention
of the first safety elevator, and the operation of  the  largest  carpet
mill;  additionally,  leaders  in several industries have set up in this
rapidly growing city which serves as the gateway between New  York  City
and the Hudson Valley; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Today,  Yonkers' Downtown Waterfront district continues to
grow, with hundreds of new luxury high-rise apartments offering  stellar
views of the Hudson River and Palisades, gourmet restaurants, shops, and
parks, just a 25-minute train ride to midtown Manhattan; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Furthermore, businesses, both large and small, continue to
thrive and grow in Yonkers, and the city is home to  cultural  amenities
including  the  Hudson  River Museum, prestigious colleges such as Sarah
Lawrence, shopping centers, the arts, beautiful parks, and entertainment
venues such as Empire City Casino; and
 
  WHEREAS, Ranked among the safest cities in the country, Yonkers  has
some  of  the  best-rated  schools  in  the  region and offers dozens of
beautiful and historic  neighborhoods,  luxury  waterfront  living,  and
housing for all incomes; and
 
  WHEREAS, Of historic origin, and remaining fruitful over the ebb and
flow  of  decades of growth and change, the City of Yonkers continues to
provide the quintessential quality of life for its residents; and
 
  WHEREAS, Today, under the able leadership of Mayor Mike  Spano,  the
residents of the City of Yonkers have a bright outlook for the future of
their  community,  which  remains a beautiful place in which to live and
raise a family; and
 
  WHEREAS, In recognition of the City of  Yonkers'  rich  history  and
enduring contribution to the State of New York, this Legislative Body is
proud  to  pay  tribute  to  this spirited city upon the occasion of its
151st Anniversary; now, therefore, be it
 
  RESOLVED,  That  this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 151st Anniversary of the City  of  Yonkers,  recognizing
the  significance  of  the  role it continues to play in the life of the
community of the State of New York; and be it further
 
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this  Resolution,  suitably  engrossed,  be
transmitted to Mayor Mike Spano, City of Yonkers, New York.
