COMMEMORATING the 17th Annual Susan B. Anthony Day
in the State of New York
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commemorate the
201st birthday of Susan B. Anthony, an unequivocal champion for women's
suffrage and equity; and
WHEREAS, To celebrate this auspicious occasion, the National Susan
B. Anthony Museum and House in Rochester, New York, will host a Gala
which will be a 30-minute inspiring program to be broadcasted on WROC-TV
on Wednesday, February 10, 2021; and
WHEREAS, The Gala's keynote speaker is Susan Zirinsky, acclaimed
journalist and groundbreaking producer, now President and Senior
Executive Producer of CBS News; the theme this year is "A 2 Z", saluting
the intersection between Susan B. Anthony as a public relations maven,
author, and newspaper editor, and Susan Zirinsky, broadcast media icon;
and
WHEREAS, Susan B. Anthony was born in Adams, Massachusetts, on
February 15, 1820, and died in Rochester, New York, on March 13, 1906,
where she spent much of her adult life; and
WHEREAS, Susan B. Anthony had a monumental impact in the history of
the United States and the State of New York by creating the first
women's movement and subsequently leading that movement for over 50
years; and
WHEREAS, Susan B. Anthony attended the National Convention of
Women's Rights in Syracuse, New York, in 1852 where she met fellow New
Yorker Elizabeth Cady Stanton and became compelled to support and lead
the cause in support of women's suffrage; and
WHEREAS, In 1868, the first proposal for women's suffrage was
introduced in the United States Congress; and
WHEREAS, Susan B. Anthony appeared before every Congress from 1869
to 1906 to ask for the passage of a suffrage amendment; and
WHEREAS, Susan B. Anthony traveled across the country giving
speeches promoting women's suffrage and risking arrest for doing so,
effectively organizing thousands of women across the country to promote
this honorable cause; and
WHEREAS, In 1872, Susan B. Anthony was arrested outside of her home
in Rochester, New York, for voting in the Presidential Election and
fined $100 for her crime, which brought national attention to the
suffrage movement; and
WHEREAS, Susan B. Anthony served as President of the National
American Women's Suffrage Association from 1892 to 1900, whose
headquarters were based in Rochester, New York, for the duration of her
term; and
WHEREAS, In 1920, the women's suffrage amendment was ratified by the
36th state, passing its final hurdle and granting women the right to
vote; and
WHEREAS, In 1921, Susan B. Anthony was posthumously recognized with
a marble statue in her honor in the United States Capitol for her
lifetime of service and advocacy in support of women; and
WHEREAS, In 1966, Susan B. Anthony's home in Rochester, New York,
was awarded National Historic Landmark status, and has since become a
national attraction for hundreds of thousands of Americans who wish to
learn more about the legacy of this visionary and courageous American
Civil Rights leader; and
WHEREAS, The 2021 Susan B. Anthony holiday observance marks the
201st Anniversary of her birth, and the 17th Annual Holiday celebrated
in the State of New York in her honor; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Susan B. Anthony committed herself to an
assortment of other worthy causes, including the abolition of slavery,
equal pay for equal work, and the rights of labor to organize; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is pleased to have this opportunity
to express its highest admiration for Susan B. Anthony, a lifelong New
Yorker and champion for equality who fought tirelessly to ensure that
our nation could continue to live up to its most sacrosanct principles,
and ensuring that no American be denied of their constitutional right to
self-governance on the basis of their sex; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate and honor the life of Susan B. Anthony upon the occasion of
the anniversary of her birth and the celebration of Susan B. Anthony Day
in the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the National Susan B. Anthony Museum and House in
Rochester, New York; and the League of Women Voters of New York State in
Albany, New York.
