COMMEMORATING the Bicentennial Stated Meeting of
the Medical Society of the County of Kings on May
25, 2022
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend and
recognize those vital organizations within the medical community for
their extraordinary and sustained contributions to the progress of
medicine and the improvement of life; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the Bicentennial Stated Meeting of the Medical Society of
the County of Kings on May 25, 2022; and
WHEREAS, Kings County Medical Society is the oldest scientific
organization in Brooklyn and the largest delegation to the Medical
Society of the State of New York (MSSNY); and
WHEREAS, The purpose of this day is to sustain the legacy and rich
history of those who paved the way for generations, through medical and
scientific contributions that support New York City patients; and
WHEREAS, In 1806, the New York State Legislature passed "An Act to
Incorporate Medical Societies for the Purpose of Regulating Physic and
Surgery in the State"; and
WHEREAS, On March 2, 1822, the Kings County Medical Society held
their first meeting with their President-Cornelius Low, Vice
President-Matthew Wendell, Secretary-Adrian Vanderveer, Treasurer-John
Carpenter, Censors-Charles Ball, Joseph G.T. Hunt and Thomas W. Henry,
and Delegate to the State Medical Society-Matthew Wendell; and
WHEREAS, There have been many individual accomplishments and
contributions toward the betterment of medical practices such as Abraham
Jacobi, M.D., L.L.D. being the pioneer in diseases of children in the
United States and James Marion Sims also known as the "father of
gynecology"; and
WHEREAS, The medical library of the Kings County Medical Society was
formed in 1844 and by the early 20th Century, the Kings County Medical
Society had the 5th largest medical library in the country, including a
rare book section; and
WHEREAS, In 1900, the Kings County Medical Society opened its grand
new colonial revival building at 1313 Bedford Avenue until 1996 where
numerous scientific conferences were held, and where local, national and
international leaders in the field presented original scientific works;
and
WHEREAS, To then mark the 100th Anniversary of the Kings County
Medical Society, they developed a Clinical Committee to establish the
continuous medical education for every practitioner in the county; and
WHEREAS, In 1961, the Medical Library Association of Brooklyn was
chartered by the University of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, In 2022, the Medical Society of the County of Kings
celebrates 200 years of physician representation and community service
in Brooklyn; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that when
organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the Bicentennial Stated Meeting of the Medical Society of
the County of Kings on May 25, 2022; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Medical Society of the County of Kings.
