Thiele: Assembly Passes Care Act to Help Caregivers at Home

Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. (I, D, WF-Sag Harbor) announced the Assembly passed the Caregiver Advise, Record and Enable (CARE) Act, which would require hospitals to provide caregivers with the information, instruction and training necessary to meet the needs of patients after they are discharged (A.1323-B).

“Across our state, New Yorkers are increasingly providing care at home for loved ones,” said Assemblyman Thiele. “Whether it’s caring for an elderly parent or a sick neighbor, those who serve as caregivers deserve all the support and assistance we can provide. The CARE Act will help the aging population of New Yorkers live comfortably in their homes.”

Specifically, the CARE Act would require hospitals to ask patients if they would like to designate a caregiver, and inform such designated caregivers of a patient’s plan of care, including training them in properly administering the patient’s medications and operating their medical equipment.
