Assemblywoman Jean-Pierre Announces Women’s Equality Legislation Has Been Signed into Law

“This is a proud day for the State of New York, one on which we have demonstrated our continued dedication to ensuring that women have equal opportunity to succeed. As an expectant mother, this is especially poignant for me knowing the laws enacted here today will impact not only my own life and career but also those of my daughter.

“Women are a vital part of the workforce and there is no question that they deserve equal pay for equal work. No one should have to choose between having a family and a career. A woman’s career should not suffer because she has or chooses to start a family. The legislation signed into law today goes a long way toward ending this discrimination once and for all.

“Beyond the workplace, the laws signed today increase protections for victims of human trafficking and domestic violence. Victims of human trafficking and domestic violence face an incredibly difficult task speaking out against their abusers. It is our responsibility as legislators to ensure victims are protected against their abusers and do not face discrimination as they begin the challenging task of rebuilding their lives.

“While we have accomplished a great deal, there is still much work to be done. Moving forward, I will continue fighting to ensure women have full and equal rights.”
