Nearly a century ago, only one out of every ten people lived in urban areas. Today, for the first time in history, most people live in cities and with such immense change in the last 100 years, our cities and towns must address challenges that aim at revitalizing our historic downtowns and ‘Main Street’ corridors. One California city saw their “humdrum business district” come back to life and is an example for making downtowns and "Main Streets" destination points in our region. Here are a few activities and events in the 109th that may be of interest: + The 1st Annual Falcon 5K & Fun Run/Walk, hosted by the Albany Booster Club, on Sunday, September 29th at 9:30 a.m. at Washington Park Lake House. They are also looking for volunteers if you don't want to run but still want to participate. We hope to see you all there! + A free Fall-Ball Lacrosse program for Albany boys in grades 4 to 10 has started. The purpose of the program is to both introduce lacrosse to all interested Albany youth. The practices will take place at Myers Middle School off of Whitehall Roadon Sunday mornings from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Weather permitting; practices will run every Sunday until October 26. + The Community Health & Wellness Expo nearby at the Albany College of Pharmacy will be held on Saturday, September 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It kicks off with a 5K walk/run at 9 a.m., followed by a day full of free health screenings, assessments, education, medication take back, zumba, yoga, $10 flu shots, Red Cross Blood Drive and much more. More information can be found here. + Larkfest is tomorrow (Saturday) along Lark Street in Albany from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. If you intend on attending this wonderful street festival, please be advised of the following parking restrictions via the Albany police department. + The Upper Madison Street Fair is on Sunday along Madison Avenue in Albany from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. The street will be alive with a variety of vendors featuring local arts & crafts, food, dancing & drumming, plein air painting, a silent auction, used book sale and activities for the kids in the Kids Zone, such as art making, yoga, face painting, chess and more! More details can be found here. + The New York State Office of General Services has announced registration for the popular annual “Capitol Hauntings” tours here at the Capitol are now available.
