Assemblywoman Russell on Recent Alcoa Announcement
March 31, 2009
“I am proud of the agreement between Alcoa and NYPA which will keep many workers at the East Plant on the job and keeps Alcoa on track to modernize the East Plant. I am deeply saddened that Alcoa has had to make further lay-offs, but my hope is that they will only be temporary. As our state and nation suffer from the worst recession in generations, I will continue to work with Alcoa to address ways the state can help in preserving and expanding their Massena operations in the future.
NYPA should be commended for their sensitivity and willingness to partner with Alcoa. Without this agreement I am sure Alcoa would have made a more drastic decision. I know that many families will be affected and I extend an open invitation to all those affected by this announcement to contact my office if I can be of any assistance.”
