Assemblywoman Russell Responds to Governorís Deficit Reduction Proposal

October 15, 2009

ďThe plan the governor laid out today was one filled with tough but necessary decisions, and I believe his assessment of our fiscal situation to be accurate and without bias, politics or favoritism. Any proposal put forth will negatively affect important programs and services that the people of this state rely on. We need a plan that does not just shift the burden onto property tax payers and local governments or impose additional taxes and fees onto our working families whose budgets are already being stretched to the breaking point. I have begun reviewing the proposed cuts to assess the impact of the governorís proposal, and the Assembly Ways and Means Committee will be conducting public hearings next week. There will be tough decisions made, but one thing I will continue to do throughout negotiations is put the livelihood of all North Country residents at the forefront of my decision making.Ē

Hearings to seek input from the public on the governorís proposal are scheduled for Wednesday, October 21, in Albany, and Friday, October 23, in Syracuse. Additionally, regional conferences with members of the Majority Conference will be held next Monday, October 19; Tuesday, October 20; and Wednesday, October 21.
