Raia Challenges Students To Live Healthy This Summer

June 6, 2007

Assemblyman Andrew Raia (R,C,I,WF-East Northport) today announced he is providing local students with his Summer Healthy Points Challenge and is participating as well. Students utilize a Healthy Points Tracking Calendar by adding their exercise and healthy eating points each day. Participants will receive recognition and those who beat Raia’s point total will have their names placed in a drawing for prizes.

“Summer is here and students can’t forget about staying healthy and active. There is nothing wrong with just hanging out sometimes, but the combination of no exercise and poor diet can result in serious health problems. My challenge is a great way to help children live a healthier lifestyle in the summer months,” said Raia.

The Summer Healthy Points Challenge offers tips for safe, fun exercise as well as valuable information about eating a healthy diet. Points for the challenge are earned through various physical activities and healthy choices that are outlined in the brochure.

“I encourage parents to be involved in this challenge and help their children understand how to live healthy lives. Upon completion, parents can verify the total number of points earned and return the student information coupon to my office. It is very important to live a healthy lifestyle and every child that participates will receive recognition for their commitment to a more active, healthy summer,” said Raia.

Raia has long been a champion of children’s causes. He has engaged in extensive and innovative community outreach projects, including press conferences for high school students and frequent visits to elementary schools to provide students with basic knowledge of the Legislature. Assemblyman Raia also holds informational workshops about the Legislature for professionals who work with children. He is an ongoing advocate of children’s programs, including the Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program, and the Boy and Girl Scouts.
