John Quincy Adams 1st Graders Treated To Self-Esteem Book Reading by Assemblyman Raia
November 6, 2008

Assemblyman Andrew Raia (R,I,C-East Northport) read “I Like Me” to eight first-grade classes at John Quincy Adams Elementary School in Deer Park on October 21. The book’s themes of sharing, tolerance and building of self-esteem have been incorporated into the students’ curriculum by their teachers. Two hundred personalized copies of the book have been given out. The books were purchased by the Circle of Dance Repertory Company with a grant secured by Raia.

“I feel it is crucial that we help to positively shape a child’s perception of themselves and others as early as possible,” said Raia. “Instilling positive virtues such as open-mindedness, sharing and respect for one’s self can help children develop a healthier way of interacting with others. This knowledge helps create a better community for all.”

Assemblyman Raia was escorted through the school by Deer Park School District Superintendent Elizabeth Marino, John Quincy Adams Principal Kelly Diamond and other staff. The assemblyman read to the classes of Mrs. Alexander/Mrs. Redden, Mrs. Bullis, Mrs. DePalo, Mrs. Dietch, Mrs. Evola/Mrs. Mozian, Mr. Galca, Mrs. Sciacca and Mrs. Tedeschi.
