Assemblyman Andrew Raia, far left, appears with student band members who performed at SCMEA Day in Albany.

Assemblyman Andrew Raia (R,I,C-East Northport) expressed his support for music education in Long Island schools when he met with student performers from the All-County Instrumental Jazz and Vocal Jazz ensembles who had traveled to Albany for the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) and Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association (SCMEA) Day in Albany. The annual event is meant to raise awareness about the importance of music instruction and education in New York State public schools. The student musicians who met with Raia – Alyssa Hasbrouck, Alexa Goetz, Andrew Cowie, Jackie Bakewell, Andre Doughty, Loray Egan, Matthew Jurman, Sami Jurman, Rachel Kammel, Ryan Kober and Zachary Zadek – participated in a concert in the South Concourse of Empire State Plaza. Raia awarded the group legislative certificates on behalf of the New York State Assembly.

“We owe it to the students of Half Hollow Hills and Half Hollow Hills East, who performed at the capital today, to support music education in their schools,” said Raia. “All of Suffolk County takes pride in their talent, and I look forward to greeting a new group of young musicians at next year’s Day in Albany.”
