Raia Foreclosure Seminar Builds Mortgage Know-How

Assemblyman Andrew Raia shakes hands with Susan Lagville, Executive Director of Housing Help, Inc., a Huntington-based home-assistance organization. Raia and Housing Help co-sponsored the January 13 event.

Assemblyman Andrew Raia (R,I,C-East Northport) held a seminar on January 13 to assist Long Island mortgage-holders in danger of foreclosure. Raia’s “How to Avoid the Mortgage Crisis,” hosted in conjunction with Huntington’s Housing Help, Inc., highlighted the problems faced by Suffolk County homeowners and their options to prevent foreclosure. A ranking Minority member of the Assembly Banks Committee, Raia voted for legislation last year that goes after fraudulent lenders and provides mortgage applicants with a Bill of Rights to protect them in the event they fall behind on payments.

“Increasingly, homeowners in our area find themselves underwater,” said Raia. “Suffolk County foreclosures rose 37 percent in 2009 and our national economic recovery has a long way to go. I would like to thank Housing Help for their commitment to mitigating the foreclosure epidemic on Long Island, and I look forward to joining them for future informational seminars. I send my gratitude, also, to all those who attended the January 13 event. I hope to continue to fight for your rights as homeowners.”
