Assemblyman Raia Statement On LIPA Election Reform

June 7, 2010
“I co-sponsored a bill that passed the Assembly today which, at last, could bring direct representation to the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA),” said Assemblyman Andrew Raia (R,I,C-East Northport). “LIPA, our region’s lone public utility, is currently operated by an appointed board of trustees who cannot be replaced by ratepayers and whose decisions involving consumers’ energy choices are too often made behind closed doors.”

“I made a pledge to the voters of my district that election reform would eventually come to LIPA. With my co-sponsored legislation today, we are one step closer to my goal of transparency for public utilities and local control over local energy choices. I strongly urge my colleagues in the state Senate to act quickly to pass this necessary and valuable reform to LIPA’s trustee representation.”
