Chuck Varese Road Sign To Be Unveiled
On June 16 the New York State Assembly passed a bill that would commemorate the life of Charles “Chuck” Varese, a Northport volunteer firefighter, by naming a portion of state Route 25A for him. A companion bill passed in the Senate on June 14 and was signed into law by the Governor shortly after.
On Monday, September 26, Assemblyman Raia (R,I,C – East Northport) will be joined by State Senator Carl L. Marcellino to attend the unveiling of the road sign in memory Mr. Varese at 10 a.m., on Harbor Circle and Route 25A in Centerport. At noon the Fourth Annual Chuck J. Varese Golf Outing will be held at the Crab Meadow Golf Course to benefit St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to finding cures for cancer affecting children. There also will be a version of the memorial unveiled at the golf outing.
“On April 15, 2008, we lost a good man,” said Raia. “I believe it is very important that we honor and memorialize Chuck’s life. Chuck was, in every sense of the word, a valiant role model in our community. I appreciate everyone’s help in the effort to have this memorial constructed in his memory.
“Chuck’s selfless acts in his service as a firefighter and community role model are a testament to his character. Men like Chuck Varese are few and far between, and his tragic death had a profound impact on all those who knew him,” said Senator Carl L. Marcellino (R-Syosset). “Naming a section of Route 25A is a fitting memorial for a man who spent his life giving back in order to make his community a safer and better place to live, work and raise a family. It was an honor to pass this legislation in his memory.”
