Assemblyman Andrew Garbarino (R,C,I-Sayville) recently attended a press conference in support of the New York State Government Transparency Act. This legislation would prevent bills from being rushed to a vote in the dark of night while New Yorkers are asleep.
The New York State Government Transparency Act would stop the clock on legislative proceedings between the hours of midnight and 8 a.m. and limit Messages of Necessity except in the case of genuine emergencies. The bill would also require a 2/3 vote to take up any Message of Necessity.
“Above all else, a legislator’s job is to work on behalf of the constituents and ensure that their needs and beliefs are heard,” said Garbarino. “Hurried, late-night votes deprive New Yorkers of their chance to get involved with the laws that affect their daily lives and further the distrust some have in our government. This legislation will help restore the faith constituents should have in our legislature. I will always be committed to providing a transparent, accountable government that honors our duty to the people of this state.”
