Return of Sales Tax Exemption Promotes Local Business

April 1 reinstatement eases tax burden on consumers

Assemblyman Andy Goodell (R,C–Chautauqua) is urging local shoppers to take advantage of the sales tax exemption on clothing and footwear under $55 that began on April 1. The 2010-11 State Budget repealed the exemption, which initially extended to merchandise up to $110. The full exemption will be reinstated on April 1, 2012.

“The tax-and-spend mentality that has dominated Albany is slowly fading into the rearview mirror,” said Goodell. “The sales tax exemption on clothing and footwear is vitally important to Chautauqua County’s families who are struggling to afford basic life essentials during this economic downturn. I am pleased that the repeal of this regressive tax will encourage New Yorkers to shop at their neighborhood clothing store and support their local economy.”
