Assemblywoman Annie Rabbitt (R,I,C-Greenwood Lake) today announced that the State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College accepted Carl Fischer for admission to its distinguished Cadet Appointment program following the Warwick Valley High School senior’s nomination by the Orange and Rockland county lawmaker. The appointment from Assemblywoman Rabbitt includes a full-tuition scholarship for qualified students who enroll at the college. Applicant qualifications are as follows:
- A minimum 1100 SAT score and 90 grade-point average,
- A first-time college student,
- A United States citizen,
- A state resident for at least one year prior to January 15 of the year of anticipated fall entrance into SUNY Maritime College, and
- Demonstrate leadership skills through extracurricular activities, as well as school and community involvement.
Seventeen-year-old Fischer carries a 90.4 grade point average and participates in Senior Project, a nationally recognized, student-driven, teacher-guided course in which the student picks a topic he is interested in concentrating on and presents their year-end project, a journal and an academic paper, to a Senior Boards Committee comprised of teachers and community leaders. Fischer’s project consisted of restoring a 1948 Ford 8N farm tractor by utilizing his engineering and mechanical knowledge.
“Congratulations to Carl on his admission to SUNY Maritime College’s Cadet Appointment program,” said Rabbitt. “This is a wonderful opportunity for this impressive young man. Students who attend SUNY Maritime open up worlds of adventure for themselves. Graduates are not only eligible to be licensed by the United States Coast Guard and serve as a ship’s officer, but have the opportunity to travel to places such as Ireland, Italy, Portugal and the Caribbean. I wish Carl and the other scholarship recipients nothing but the best of luck in their future endeavors.”
The Cadet Appointment program enables the governor and members of the state Legislature to each nominate high school students to attend SUNY Maritime College, a historic four-year nautical college located in Throgs Neck, NY. For years, the state Legislature and Executive have played an integral role in selecting outstanding individuals to join SUNY Maritime’s “Regiment of Cadets.”
