Sales Tax Exemption On Clothing Is Back

Last year, the state budget eliminated the sales tax exemption on clothing and footwear purchases under $110. I voted against this measure and am pleased to inform residents that the exemption has been partially restored. Starting April 1, 2011, residents will be exempt from paying the state’s sales tax on clothing and footwear purchases under $55, and next year, the exemption will be fully restored on purchases under $110. While Albany needs to do more to provide tax relief for New York State’s hardworking residents, the partial restoration of this exemption is a step in the right direction.
