Utica – Assemblyman Anthony J. Brindisi (D-Utica) says the public is invited to attend an educational forum on preparing area K-12 as well as post-secondary students and the Mohawk Valley region’s workforce for jobs in the science and technology fields, or for skilled labor opportunities.
Brindisi says the forum will take place on Monday, December 19th from 9 a.m. to noon in the new student center at the SUNY Institute of Technology in Marcy.
“I have been meeting with business owners, educators, and labor representatives for several months, and one of the big concerns I frequently hear is about making sure our local students have the skills to support new industry and workforce development needs, especially in the semiconductor, nanotechnology, cyber-security, and clean technology fields,” Brindisi said.
Brindisi says the forum will focus on improving Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum in area school districts and colleges, and how to coordinate workforce development and labor union programs to help train area residents for the jobs of the 21st Century.
The forum will start with a group of panelists representing the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering of the University of Albany (CNSE), as well as education, business, economic development, and workforce development agencies discussing their perceptions about what needs to be done to better prepare for the new jobs coming to the Mohawk Valley.
Brindisi says pre-registering for the forum would be appreciated, and it can be done by emailing the office at brindisia@assembly.state.ny.us, or by calling the Utica District Office at (315) 732-1055.
