Assemblyman Anthony J. Brindisi (D-Utica) announced the passage of a bill he co-sponsored that would provide municipalities and local school districts with the authority to issue serial bonds to help pay for flood-relief measures and it would allow additional flexibility in determining how to finance those expenses (A.9211).
“Hurricane Irene caused some of the worst local flooding recorded in recent history with damages that estimated over $1 million,” Assemblyman Brindisi said. “This bill would help provide local governments and schools the ability to better manage repair costs and get our communities back on their feet.”
Many homes, roads and small businesses were washed away when the Sauquoit Creek overflowed. The measure would help communities continue to move forward with rebuilding what the flooding from Irene destroyed, noted Assemblyman Brindisi.
Back in December, to assist local families affected by the storms, a number of government grants were created to help alleviate recovery costs. These grants went to eligible small businesses, not-for-profit organizations, farms or owners of multiple dwellings that sustained direct physical flood-related damage.
“This measure is good news for small businesses and our schools,” Assemblyman Brindisi said. “It’s nice to know that when things get tough, our community has the support we need to get back on our feet.”
