Assemblymember Anthony J. Brindisi (D-Utica) announced today that five million dollars was allocated in the 2012-13 state budget for military base retention efforts. Brindisi also said another six-hundred thousand dollars was allocated for military base redevelopment.
“It is very good news that New York State is stepping forward to promote, protect and enhance the importance of its military assets in New York State from potential threats that could occur with defense cuts and the potential from a potential authorization of one or more base closure rounds,” said Steve DiMeo, President of Mohawk Valley EDGE. “We applaud the leadership and efforts of Senator Griffo and Assemblyman Brindisi who secured support from their respective legislative bodies for this funding. We also commend Governor Cuomo for his support in making the protection of New York State defense assets a priority in this budget agreement.”
“This funding is the first step in protecting jobs at Rome Labs, DFAS and the Eastern Air Defense,” Brindisi said. “The next step is to bring everyone together – local leaders and elected officials at the county, state and federal levels – to develop and implement a comprehensive plan aimed at saving our local military assets.”
The Air Force Research Laboratory employs around 1,300 people and is estimated to provide over $285 million in economic benefits to Central New York. In addition, DFAS employs approximately 1,180 people, with a total payroll in Rome approaching $45 million and the Eastern Air Defense Sector employs approximately 400 people.
“These are some of the best-paying jobs in the Mohawk Valley and losing them could create a domino effect,” said Brindisi. “I will continue to fight to protect these jobs, and those at other local businesses who would be impacted by any cuts.”
