Brindisi Opposes 45% Toll Hike for Trucks
June 1, 2012
The State Thruway Authority recently gave preliminary approval to raise tolls 45 percent on big trucks with three or more axles, with the possibility of more toll increases for all drivers in the future. The toll hike would add about $20 for a Thruway trip between Buffalo and Albany, and nearly $40 for a trip from Buffalo to New York City. Tolls for the Thruway were last raised about 25 percent in 2010 for all drivers. Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi (D-Utica) today issued the following statement on the issue:
“I oppose the New York State Thruway Authority’s proposed 45 percent toll increase for trucks. Any toll increase in this difficult economy would place a huge burden on small businesses already struggling to make ends meet. Small businesses will be required to cut back on resources and staff, or increase the cost of goods to make up for this increase.”
“Aside from increasing the cost of doing business, this toll increase will force truckers to get off the Thruway, putting them onto local roads and endangering the safety of our communities. I urge the Thruway Authority to rethink this decision that will have a harmful effect on the safety and economic well-being of our community.”
