Mandate Relief Bill
February 6, 2013
Assemblyman Anthony J. Brindisi (D-Utica) announced today that he is sponsoring legislation in the State Assembly to amend state law and require that the state fund any program which imposes a mandate on a municipality or school district. State Senator Joseph Griffo of Rome is sponsoring similar legislation in the State Senate (S1294.)
Brindisi said the bill not only would require that programs that are set up by the state be state-funded, but would also protect local governments and school districts from unfunded mandates and would allow local officials to set priorities for their own areas.
“Mandate relief is consistently one of the top concerns I hear, not just from school superintendents and municipal officials, but also from the general public,” Brindisi said. “Local property tax relief will not fully occur until the practice of unfunded mandates ends, and this legislation would go a long way toward reducing the financial burden placed on New York State property owners.”
