Mohawk Valley Homeowners would see $2,300 average increase on their tax bill
In defense of middle-class homeowners in the Mohawk Valley, Assemblymember Anthony J. Brindisi (D-Utica) says he is strongly in opposition to a federal proposal that would eliminate federal tax deductions for local and state liabilities, including property taxes. Changes to the long-standing itemized deduction are currently under consideration in Washington as part of budget discussions.
Brindisi says he has contacted Federal representatives expressing his opposition to the plan.
“The last thing we need right now is a major tax hike from Washington – especially one that discourages homeownership,” Assemblymember Brindisi said. “The elimination of this tax deduction would hurt middle class families who own their home, as well as further push the American dream of owning a home further out of reach for many.”
In 2010, about 3.3 million New York taxpayers used the itemized deductions, including for state and local taxes paid. As a result of the proposed deduction, 39,612 taxpayers in the Mohawk Valley would see an average increase of $2,300 on their tax bill.
