Assemblymember Anthony J. Brindisi (D-Utica) is inviting children to participate in the New York State Assembly’s annual Summer Reading Challenge, which will be getting underway shortly. Every year, the Assembly partners with New York State libraries to encourage children to keep reading during the summer after the school year ends. Children who complete the Challenge will receive a New York State Assembly Excellence in Reading certificate in the mail.
“Students in my Assembly district will be getting a flyer at school that has a calendar in it,” Brindisi said. “This will be an easy way to keep track of how much they read during July and August. Any child who reads at least 15 minutes a day for at least 40 days during those two months will receive a certificate for participating.”
“This year’s Summer Reading Challenge theme for young students is ‘Dig Into Reading’, and the theme for tweens is ‘Beneath the Surface’,” said Brindisi. “Studies have shown a decrease in learning known as the ‘summer slide’ often occurs when young people aren’t in school, and this challenge is a fun way to help keep books in the hands of students over the summer.”
For more information about the summer reading challenge, or if you would like to receive a brochure, please email Assemblymember Brindisi’s at brindisia@assembly.state.ny.us or call his district office at (315) 732-1055.
