Assemblymember Brindisi: Oneida Nation Deal Passes Assembly
June 21, 2013
Assemblymember Brindisi (D-Utica) announced the Assembly passed the Upstate New York Gaming Economic Development Act of 2013, which codifies into law the deal Governor Andrew Cuomo struck with the Oneida Indian Nation to prohibit Las Vegas style casinos in a 10-county area (A.8101).
“This historic legislation is a win for everyone, especially Mohawk Valley taxpayers, said Assemblymember Brindisi. “By ending years of litigation and establishing a revenue sharing agreement, we will be better suited to hold the line on property taxes. In addition, the Oneida Nation will retain exclusive gaming rights in the region, which will prevent an oversaturation of gambling facilities in our area. Now we can look toward the future together – finding ways to grow tourism and expand our economy.”
The legislation now must be passed by the Senate and signed by the governor. After which, the proposal will go before voters in the form of a referendum in the fall.
