(Utica) – Assemblymember Anthony J. Brindisi (D-Utica) has announced that the Workforce Investment Board of Herkimer, Madison, and Oneida Counties has received a $100,000 grant from Empire State Development Corporation to highlight the Mohawk Valley’s Revolutionary War heritage in tourism marketing programs.
The funding will be utilized to create the Path through History Project, which will include a web site; the development of marketing tools; and the creation of ‘the Revolutionary War Trail’ as a way to promote historic tourism in the region, and to engage and inform visitors.
“This project will allow historic destinations and tourism related businesses to work together and highlight the many cultural and historic attractions in the Mohawk Valley region that are connected to the American Revolution,” said Brindisi. “When you consider that we have the Oriskany Battlefield and Monument, Fort Stanwix, the General Herkimer Home, and other attractions all within a few miles of each other, it is clear that our area played an important role in the war for America’s independence. This is something that is unique to our region, and that should be cross-promoted.”
Seven tourism agencies in the region are working together on the project to create websites, advertising campaigns, and brochures that will not only list local attractions, but also help local businesses market their enterprises. Participants in the project will have websites that will cross-link with the new Revolutionary War Trail in their travel literature. The campaign also will highlight the region’s history in the French and Indian War; The Erie Canal; and as an early center of manufacturing and innovation.
