Governor Cuomo has signed into law legislation sponsored by State Senator Joseph Griffo (R-Rome) and Assemblymember Anthony Brindisi (D-Utica) which renames State Route 46, beginning in Rome, as the ‘Black River Trail.’ The new law will designate the road as a part of the State’s Scenic Byways System.
Senator Griffo, a member of the Senate Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks and Recreation Committee, expressed appreciation of the Governor's approval of the new law, "The Governor has shown a commitment to promote upstate tourism through a major advertising campaign in New York City. Last May, he held a tourism summit in Albany and announced one of the largest tourism campaigns in decades, committing $60 million to promote the industry. We're working to see that Mohawk Valley destinations are mentioned as part of that campaign. The inclusion of Route 46 into the Scenic Byway designation gives it a higher profile for those who want to explore the Black River Trail."
“Communities with designated scenic byways receive some significant benefits through this designation, including the ability to obtain grants to improve the byway system; obtaining better tourism promotion for the region; and receiving improved traveler services,” Brindisi said.
The Scenic Byways Program now includes over 2,000 miles of roads in New York State that have particular scenic, recreational, cultural, natural, or archaeological significance. The program, established under the State Department of Transportation is utilized to help preserve unique environments and promote tourism.
