Simotas Statement about Limiting Formula Distribution in NYC Hospitals
November 7, 2012
In addition to interfering with a mother’s personal choice, the recent focus on the importance of breastfeeding, particularly the efforts to make formula unavailable to new mothers at the hospital, is unrealistic without the support and time necessary to breastfeed. The vast majority of women who work have limited leave and no private space or time in the workplace to pump breast milk or to wash and maintain the breast milk pump. Encouraging choices, including breast feeding, is wonderful. Setting women up to fail is just plain wrong.
