Nojay Endorses Unshackle Upstate’s Economic Revitalization Agenda To Cut Taxes For New York Families
September 4, 2013

Assemblyman Bill Nojay (R,I) today endorsed Unshackle Upstate’s Economic Revitalization Agenda, which is designed to reduce the oppressive tax burden imposed on Upstate New York families and businesses.

“I am proud to join with Unshackle Upstate to push for the revitalization of Upstate New York’s economy. Our Upstate communities are shrinking as residents and businesses flee for states with better tax climates. If we do not act now, we risk losing our way of life for good,” said Nojay. “Upstate families and businesses desperately need relief from New York’s highest-in-the-nation taxes. When we return to Albany in January, we will be working tirelessly to pass tax reforms that will create jobs and bring businesses back to Upstate New York.”

The Economic Revitalization Agenda will produce a 25 percent reduction in the state income tax for Upstate residents making less than $50,000 per year. It also calls for the gradual repeal of the corporate franchise tax by 2018. In addition, the plan would eliminate the 18-A Energy Tax for Upstate manufacturers and reduce the state sales tax by 50 percent in economically-depressed Upstate counties.

The State Senate is holding hearings across the state about New York’s tax code, and even Gov. Cuomo has recently expressed his interest in enacting a tax cut during the upcoming legislative session. Nojay is pushing for Unshackle Upstate’s plan to keep this momentum for lower taxes moving into the new year, when the legislature can act on it.

“It is time for New York’s elected leaders to take a new approach to tax reform. For too long, this state has passed targeting tax cuts for politically well-connected industries, like the Empire Zones and Gov. Cuomo’s ill-conceived Start-Up NY plan. If our leaders are really serious about tax reform, they need to take a hard look at Unshackle Upstate’s Economic Revitalization Agenda.”
