Assemblyman Bill Reilich (R,C,I-Greece) recently announced the governor’s intentions to reduce the snowmobile fund in upwards of $2.9 million. The fund, which is dedicated to the improvement and maintenance of snowmobile trails in New York state, is supplied by snowmobile license fees. The governor’s intention is to make this fund available to the enforcement of laws for all recreational activities in excess of $1.9 million, as well as charging the snowmobile fund an additional $1 million for “administrative costs.”
“Snowmobiling is a popular and enjoyable activity here in Monroe County,” stated Reilich. “The fund is supported by the collection of state fees on snowmobile users. This is an activity that allows the hardworking people of our state an opportunity to get outdoors, ride through our beautiful trails and enjoy a moment of leisure. Individuals are being taxed on everything from pop to healthcare, now the governor wants to take away their fun as well.”
In 2008, the Assemblyman sponsored a bill that would put a stop to the transfer of money from its intended fund; the bill died in committee. The Assemblyman is now supporting the re-evaluation of Assembly Bill 00989 in order to, once again, prevent the governor from sweeping money dedicated to a snowmobiler’s fund and use it elsewhere.
“It is important that the governor look in other areas of state government for cuts that can be made to help counteract excessive spending,” said Reilich. “Taking money out of funds that are vital to tourism and the relaxation of over-taxed New Yorkers is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”
