Oaks Announces Correction Officer Trainee Exam Schedule
June 29, 2006

Assemblyman Bob Oaks (R,C-Macedon) reminds district residents that the state Department of Correctional Services will hold a competitive Civil Service examination throughout the state on Saturday, Sept. 9. The correction officer trainee exam will be given in both English and Spanish.

“For residents of my district and New Yorkers seeking a rewarding career, I hope they will consider taking the exam and join the ranks as one of the most professional and dedicated employees in our state,” said Oaks.

The starting annual salary for an officer trainee is $34,329. Upon successful completion of an eight-week training program and a one-year probationary period, the annual salary increases to $41,348. Officers are also eligible for a comprehensive health insurance program, benefits package and retirement program.

To take this comprehensive written exam, individuals must be in good physical and mental health, adds Oaks. At the time of appointment, candidates must be a U.S. citizen at least 21 years old, be a New York state resident and possess either a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED).

A prior felony conviction automatically disqualifies applicants, while candidates with misdemeanor convictions are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

To qualify for consideration to become an officer, applicants must score at least 70 on the written exam, results of which are ranked according to score. Applicants then undergo a background check and must qualify medically, physically and psychologically before appointment to the training academy for the eight-week training program followed by three weeks of on-the-job experience.

Oaks informs residents that applications are available at www.docs.state.ny.us, or at all state Department of Labor offices and all New York state correctional facilities. Applications must be postmarked no later than Aug. 7, and a $30 filing fee must accompany the paperwork.
