Assemblyman Oaks’ Statement On Governor Spitzer’s 2008-2009 Executive Budget
January 22, 2008
I applaud Governor Spitzer’s efforts to put forth a balanced budget; however, his proposal includes a growth rate of over 5% at a time when anticipated revenues are decreasing. I am concerned that this growth rate is not sustainable in the future. It appears that additional taxes, fees and “one-shot” revenues have been substituted for needed increased property tax relief for our citizens.
Because the Governor’s proposal delays increases in STAR rebates and does not include a property tax relief plan, it will hurt property owners throughout the state.
As budget negotiations begin, I will be fighting for more tax relief and reduced spending. I am hopeful for the future of Upstate New York and I will continue to work with the Governor and the rest of the state Legislature to ensure the best for its citizens.
