The 2008-09 State Budget has taken an estimated $1 million from the $8 million Snowmobile Trail Development and Maintenance Fund and placed those funds into the General Fund. Snowmobile registration fees were increased with the Snowmobile Rights and Responsibilities Act of 2005 based on the promise that the fees would be used to subsidize the Snowmobile Fund to help develop more trails, increase snowmobile safety education and enforce the state’s snowmobile laws.
Transferring money from this dedicated fund to the General Fund is breaking the promise to those snowmobilers of our state who asked to have their registration fees increased to improve their access to trails.
I am joining with Wayne County Clerk, Mike Jankowski, in asking area residents to sign a petition to call on the governor and the Legislature to return the $1 million back to the Snowmobile Trail Development and Maintenance Fund.
“I am happy to be working with Assemblyman Oaks in petitioning our Albany leaders to return the funds that were taken from the Snowmobile Fund. An agreement was made to use the increased registration fees for the good of the trails and I am calling on our government leaders to make sure that promise is kept,” stated Jankowski.
