Sex Offender E-Mail Alert Legislation Signed
Legislative statement by Assemblyman Robert C. Oaks (R,C – Macedon)
September 21, 2009
This summer, I voted for legislation that will allow parents to sign up for e-mail notices through the Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) alerting them to Level 2 and 3 sex offenders in their neighborhoods. This program will provide parents convenient e-mail updates from the sex offender registry on high risk offenders in their neighborhood. Because the database is constantly being updated with new entries, it is very difficult for parents to keep current with information about offenders in their area; this program makes it easier for parents to ensure that their children are safe. I am proud this legislation was officially signed into law Thursday by the governor and will take effect in March of 2010. This is just one more step in ensuring the safety of our children.
