I think Governor Paterson sounded the right tone in his 2010 state of the state address. He seems to understand the depth of our fiscal problems and the level of challenge that confronts our state. Now we need him to follow through with the type of leadership to address the crisis and begin to fix our problems.
We have a multi-billion dollar deficit, high unemployment and high taxes. Add to that an unresponsive government and numerous ethical problems in Albany and it is only appropriate that New Yorkers are calling out loudly for reform. I am encouraged by some of the Governor’s proposals. They are a step in the right direction toward the type of accountability that has been sorely lacking in state government.
We need fiscal reform, government reform and reform of our ethics laws. We need to make 2010 the “Year of Reform” in state government.
I stand ready to work and be a partner with the Governor wherever I can. If I disagree with him it will be based on policy, not partisanship. We need real solutions for the daunting problems that face our state.
