Kavanagh Holds Community Forum on State Budget
January 15, 2009
On Thursday, January 15, 2009, Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh, State Senator Liz Krueger, and Assemblymember Dick Gottfried sponsored a community forum to discuss the New York State budget for the 2009-2010 fiscal year. The forum, at Norman Thomas High School at Park Avenue and East 33rd Street, opened with brief presentations from Kavanagh and his colleagues on the fiscal situation, including a projected deficit of $12.5 billion, and the proposed Executive Budget the Governor presented to the legislature last month. The legislators then fielded questions and heard concerns from community residents and advocates. Issues discussed included the sharp decline in State revenues, the MTA’s budget problems (which are in addition to the State deficit), the ramifications of proposed budget cuts in health care, education, and other important programs, and potential revenue increases like a proposed roll-back of tax cuts on high-income taxpayers that have been enacted in recent years.
