Kavanagh, Squadron, and Education Council Announce Meeting to Resolve School Admissions Issues in District 1
December 3, 2009
Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh, State Senator Daniel Squadron, and District 1 Community Education Council (CEC) President Lisa Donlan announced that the Department of Education (DOE) has agreed to change its admissions process for District 1 students. The pre-K and kindergarten admissions process in District 1 has been an issue of great concern in the community. This announcement comes after intensive efforts by Kavanagh, Squadron, Donlan, and many District 1 parents who have advocated for an improved policy that reduces inconvenience and uncertainty for parents and children, increases continuity in students’ education, and promotes diversity in schools and equal opportunity for all students. Parents, community residents, and allies are encouraged to attend a special session of the District 1 CEC for a DOE presentation on admissions on Wednesday, December 9th at 6:00 p.m. in the auditorium at the Corlears Complex at 220 Henry Street. The meeting will be an important opportunity to get information on the new policy and how it will affect families, and to voice any questions or concerns. For more information or if you have any questions, please contact Izzy Murguia in Kavanagh’s District Office at 212-979-9696.
