State Government’s Withholding Of Taxpayer Refunds Latest Case Of The “Nickel-And-Diming” Of New Yorkers

Statement from Assembly Minority Leader Brian M. Kolb (R,I,C-Canandaigua)
February 19, 2010

“State government’s inexplicable decision to withhold taxpayer refunds will cause more financial pain to individuals and small businesses who were counting on getting their money back. This is the latest case of the perpetual ‘nickel and diming’ of New Yorkers. People who submitted their tax returns in advance should have a reasonable expectation of receiving a timely refund. However, instead of getting their money back, state government plans to hold onto it until April. Taxpayers who played by the rules and did the right thing should not be penalized because state government failed to manage its finances and cash flow. Governor Paterson and Commissioner of Taxation and Finance Woodward need to reverse this absurd public policy and ensure taxpayers do not have to wait to get their money back.”
