Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci and colleagues hear testimony during a public meeting on electric-generated power on Long Island.
Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci (R,C,WF,I-Huntington Station) today joined fellow Long Island Assembly Minority Conference members to host a public meeting focused on the future of electric-generated power on Long Island. The meeting came in response to an overwhelming call from groups and individuals demanding scrutiny of the Long Island Power Authority’s (LIPA) storm performance in the wake of Superstorm Sandy. During the meeting, Lupinacci heard testimony from members of the Suffolk County LIPA Oversight Committee, Renewable Energy Long Island and local governments on the need for reform of the utility, including but not limited to contractual improvements, management audits and privatization of the authority.
“Our residents deserve to have the best services available, and I think we need to be willing to look at a variety of proposals to best meet the needs of all involved,” said Lupinacci. “No one can fully anticipate the effect a natural disaster may have on a community. Despite these uncertainties, through proper preparation and allocation of resources, we can be better prepared to respond quickly and efficiently to future disasters.”
During the meeting, local officials – including Sheldon Sackstein, a member of Suffolk County LIPA Oversight Committee and a former LIPA Board of Trustee, and Neal Lewis, Executive Director of the Sustainability Institute at Molloy College and a member of the Stakeholder Committee for the study being conducted by LIPA and National Grid on the re-powering of the Northport and Port Jefferson power plants – offered perspective and insight on problems and potential solutions which resulted from the storm.
“Today’s meeting is an important step toward ensuring the long-term safety and affordability of power on Long Island. Through this kind of open dialogue between all parties involved, we can deliver the services in the best way possible for our residents,” concluded Lupinacci.
